Fixes for the walls coding agents keep hitting
Each is one rule for AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md that stops agents rediscovering the same failure. Each is measured on adopters’ own machines, before and after, and pooled here once 5 people stand behind it. None has 5 measured adopters yet, so there are no numbers yet.
How agents are allowed to work
- `gh api` and `gh issue` are denied0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- Codex’s sandbox refuses writes outside the workspace0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- Don’t-ask runs can’t read or write ~/.claude0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- Loops and chained shell commands get denied0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- MCP tools are denied0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- Other tools denied in don’t-ask mode0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- Web fetches are denied0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
The machine they run on
- A CLI or OAuth login expired0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- A dependency is missing (broken node_modules)0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- Dev server port already in use0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- The disk fills up mid-run0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
- Typecheck or build runs out of memory0 of 5 peopleGathering evidence. No numbers until enough people have adopted it.
How it’s measured: trail compares sessions in the same repository and the same permission mode before and after the rule was added. When the permission mode changed, the comparison is left out instead of claimed. Only counts leave a machine; never code, prompts or file names.
